Faced with more and more demand in aesthetic medicine for \u201csoft\u201d (nonsurgical) techniques to combat the effects of ageing, the number and quality of injectable materials have evolved considerably in recent years and their use has become extremely common. These are liquid products that can be injected either to remodel certain parts of the face or to fill lines, furrows or other facial depressions. A session of injections can be performed alone, but can also supplement more radical medico-surgical rejuvenation techniques such as resurfacing (peeling, laser, dermabrasion), blepharoplasties (upper and\/or lower eyelids), a facelift, etc.
\nIt can also be done in parallel with injections of botulinum toxin to reduce the tonus of certain muscles responsible for the appearance of lines.<\/p>\n
Since 1975, doctors have used botulinum toxin to correct childhood squinting, facial tics and uncontrollable blinking of the eye.
\nIn medical aesthetics, Dr Carruthers, a Canadian ophthalmologist, was the first to notice that his patients treated with botulinum toxin had fewer lines around their eyes than others. In 1990, an observant patient asked him to \u201cmatch up\u201d the other eye, and the aesthetic indication was born.
\nUnder the name BOTOX, botulinum toxin received authorisation from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States in 2002 for use in the treatment of lines between the eyebrows or “frown lines”.<\/p>\n
